Cross media advertising means that you advertise the same product across different types of media. For example as I am doing the music videos along with digipak and poster this is creating a same product over a different media scale.
The music video can be released followed by an advertisement on tv followed by a poster on a bus followed by the actual product. To advertise this is what people do they have a lot of people helping them to get the message across. The more ways they cross media advertise the better the sale.
The work we are doing is crossed media and this helps us to realise that its not just about the music video its about getting the message across also. If we just produced a music video we would have to rely on people looking it up for themselves however putting it in peoples faces means that they know it exists and is out there the rest is up to the audience.

Linear V Non-linear
The type of software that I am using is Non-linear. Non-linear means you can edit different sequences and move scenes around. Linear means that you can't edit different sequences. An advantage of Linear editing is that it is simple and inexpensive. Learning linear editing skills increases your knowledge base and versatility. Non-linear software is said to be more frequently used in todays society perhaps as you can change which order you want the sequence to be played. An advantage of non-linear software is that it is fast and high quality and easy to use. Again same with the linear software. Linear software you don't need to learn a lot however with non-linear there is a little more to know.
Overall I believe the non-linear software is the best to use in todays society due to the fact that you can cut out any part of a scene or move things around. You don't need to shoot in a paticular way.

Research into media and technology
The camera I will be using to create the music video is a Sony A1 video camera. I have never used this camera before so it will be a challenge. The reason why I am choosing this camera is because I have access to this camera at college. I have researched into what this camcorder contains and reviews on this. The dimensions on this camera excluding the lens and microphone is 71 x 103 x 191 mm (excluding lens hood and microphone). The continuous recording time on these camera's is 320 min (with NP-QM91D, LCD off, HDV recording). I got this information from a website (http://www.sony.co.uk/biz/product/hdvcamcorders/hvr-a1e/technicalspecs) This website also has more information about the outputs and inputs involved with this camera. Firstly I do believe this camera is quite good and for the music video I am creating it should do a good job. When looking at reviews on this camera I have found another website where one person shared there views on this camera. Firstly the person said "in fact I would go so far as to say that the HVR-A1E is one of the sexiest looking camcorders I have ever seen. " They also said that the camera "Finished in black, the HVR-A1E is a very compact design, but not too compact that you can’t comfortably hold it and operate all the controls without the aid of a pair of tweezers like some other compact camcorders." It seems to me that the camcorder is quite easy to operate and use and it isn't difficult to access some areas of the camera. I think overall this camera is quite good to use and I am looking forward to using it.
I will also be using photoshop when creating my digipak and poster. I have used photoshop several times in the past and therefore I have no problem in using it again. From research in the past I have heard mixed reviews due to the fact that it is quite complicated and there is quite a lot of different areas within photoshop. The cons of photoshop are that it is a steep learning curve however luckily I have used this before so it shouldn't be too much of a problem for me to get back into it.

This has a lot of pros and cons again on photoshop again and comparing it with Photoshop cs4. Most of it is positive however the price becomes an issue. I think overall having ratings like this is very good. The fact that the features on photoshop has almost 5 stars shows that it is not boring and there is always something to do. The ease of use shows that perhaps it takes a while to get used to it but again the rating is quite good. Secondary Audience research
I went on the website for Bauer Media (http://www.bauermedia.co.uk/Brands/Kerrang/) and looked at the audience profile for kerreng just to get a more definite answer to what my main audience is.
This is the audience profile I found and as you can see my main audience is males between 15-35.
As I also believe that some artist in kerrang are very similar to artists in NME I have decided to research NME to see if the audience is the same or similar. (http://www.ipcmedia.com/press/nme_radio_doubles_audience_share_press_300708.html) The information I found was related to the radio however I feel that this can be used as a research basis as the music video I produce has to fit the target audience and if they listen to it on the radio then they must enjoy it.
The results about age were very similar so my target is to satisfy that age range. However it does not mention if it is males or females. However I believe my target audience is more males than females.

Along with just researching simple facts I decided to also find some pictures from concerts and analyse who is in the photo just to get a more in depth look at who my target audience are. The first band I have chosen to analyse the audience is Shinedown due to the fact that I feel that this is the music I want to do. I got this image from google. From the look of the image it is easy to tell that there are more men than women here. Which backs up my results in the other research that I have done that women are not as interested in this sort of music as men.
The next band I have had a look at is System of a Down. This is a little more heavyer than shinedown however I still like them. Again this picture mainly male. I can see one girl however this doesn't mean that girls do not enjoy this music however my target audience is clearly for all the men. Therefore I need to think more about perhaps excluding romance as most men prefer comedy or violence.
So to some up all of my secondary research my target audience are males between 25-55 by the look of the band I want to do. However despite this the band that I have chosen have made some great music videos of all sorts of genre so I think I will make my audience male but perhaps add a little more romance into it.

I have decided to do this for several videos so I don't just get a lucky video I was more precise results.

Top 50 Music videos
Here is a link to a web page that lists the top 50 best music videos of the decade with an explanation of why they were chosen. This website shows what makes a good music video and what is best to include. In this link it has a mixture of music videos and I have realised I want to do rock genre music video therefore I have decided to research the top rock music videos on yahoo music. http://new.music.yahoo.com/videos/7318731. The results of the most popular rock music videos were a toss up between Bon Jovi the Scorpions and David Bowie. I think the more classic rock videos have been the most successful.
Primary research
For part of my primary research I have decided to create a mini questionnaire to gain some responses to people in my target audience which are late teens/young adults. This is because as part of my secondary research I tried to find out what age groups really watch music videos I did find out that it is mainly younger people therefore this is why I have given people in my target audience the chance to fill in my mini questionnaire which did reveal that 90% of the people I asked to fill in did in fact watch music videos. Due to the fact that I am also creating a bigger questionnaire online and using facebook to publicise this and also creating a focus group I have decided only to create 10 of these questionnaires. That is why it revealed that 90% of the people did watch music videos. My questionnaire had these questions.

This did get a wide range of responses, 50% of people listened and watched rock music videos.They were also given the option to circle more than once choice therefore the numbers do not add up to 10. The gender based response was both 50/50 as I wanted to make it fair for both genders and my results.

Also most of the people I asked liked the genre of romance and comedy. A few people liked the genre of violence. However I think based on this research I am going to chose rock and make the genre either romance or comedy or even a bit of both.
I have made another questionnaire on google which I have emailed to several people and posted on facebook. I am waiting on a decent amount of replies before analysing however the questions in this questionnaire are. What gender are you? What age range are you? What genre of music do you listen to? What was the name of the last music video you watched? What do you look for within a music video? What genre of music video do you prefer?
The results that come back from this questionnaire will determine exactly what I do or include within my music video. I had 26 responses which was quite disappointing considering the fact that I left it on a forum and published it to facebook. Out of the 26 responses I got back 16 females answered my questionnaire and only 9 males answered it. Which again was disappointing due to the fact that I wanted even responses but I suppose that it quite difficult in a questionnaire.
I wasn't surprised with the results I got back from this question. As I posted it to facebook I knew the age ranges would be close to mine. I don't really have many older people on facebook apart from close family. I asked this question simply for finding out what age ranges like rock music which I will post later.
For this question I just wanted people's likes. I know I want to create a rock music video but I just wanted to see what music people do listen to. I was quite pleased to the that rock is a popular genre of music to listen to and as I am choosing the genre rock I am very happy with that.
This question was included just so I could see what people like about music videos and what they expect to see. Clearly they picked the song however story was a popular one and it seems to me that including a story whilst the song is playing is a good idea.
This question has not made my decision any easier. 9 people said they like the genre of romance and 9 people chose all of above. I think they might of just clicked that rushing as one of the main problems with questionnaires is its not always valid however I think I might include within my video all the above apart from horror. Try and get a little bit of everything in my video.
Overall I feel that with the research I have gained I will stick to a rock music video but maybe consider the fact that compared to my secondary research women do enjoy rock music too so I need to perhaps satisfy everyones needs. When looking at my results collectively in a table women did pick rock music.

So this backs up my results that 7 females favorite genre of music is rock and I can think about both the females and males now.
